The latest by-election result, which has seen Labour lose one of their safest seats, has shown the Liberal Democrats are in a strong position to beat Labour in Edinburgh North & Leith at the next UK General Election.

Labour lost the constituency of Glasgow East, one of their safest seats in the UK. The SNP, which started from a clear second place in the constituency, won the seat with a majority of 365 votes.

Labour has now lost three seats in by-elections since the last General Election.

  • Labour lost Dunfermline & West Fife to the Liberal Democrats, who started from second place.

  • Labour lost Crewe & Nantwich to the Tories, who started from second place

  • Labour lost Glasgow East to the SNP, who started from second place

With the Liberal Democrats in a strong second place in Edinburgh North & Leith, the results show the Lib Dems can beat Labour here and win.

Kevin Lang, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Edinburgh North & Leith said,

"The Glasgow East by-election result shows that people are fed up with Gordon Brown and determined to see the back of this Labour Government. Everyday, I meet people who have supported Labour all of their lives but are fed up with a Prime Minister and a UK Government that are out of touch and are offering no answers to the problems affecting people in their everyday lives.

"The Glasgow East by-election, taken with the other by-elections in Dunfermline and Crewe, show that voters want to get rid of this Government and will back the party best able to defeat Labour in their own constituency.

"With the Liberal Democrats a close second to Labour in Edinburgh North & Leith and with the Tories and SNP in a distant third and fourth place, the message is clear. The only way to beat Labour in Edinburgh North & Leith is to vote for the Liberal Democrats. Voting Tory or SNP will only help Labour win."
