Liberal Democrats in Edinburgh North & Leith have promised to fight 'tooth and nail' against plans to close three popular post offices in Edinburgh North & Leith.

The Labour Government has chosen to close 2,500 post offices across the UK, axing one in every five branches. News has been leaked showing that 13 branches have been lined up for closure in Edinburgh including three popular post offices - Goldenacre, Pilrig Toll and Elm Row.

The proposed closures come on top of a series of other branch closures over recent years including the loss of post offices at Hope Street, Comely Bank, Strachan Road, Craigleith Hill and Newhaven.

Liberal Democrat Westminster candidate Kevin Lang said, "Liberal Democrats will fight these closure plans tooth and nail. These are three popular and well used branches which many people, especially the elderly, rely on for essential services.

"The Tories closed thousands of post offices when they were in office. Now Labour is hell bent on closing thousands more. People have been astonished that rather than supporting these local branches, our local Labour MP has actually supported the mass closure programme.

"A six week consultation process will now start next week and it will be essential for everyone who wants to see these post offices kept open to help in our local campaign. The Liberal Democrats will be contacting the affected residents over the coming days to make sure they are aware of the closure plans and encourage them to back our local petitions to keep the branches open.

"If enough local people make their voices heard, I am convinced we can save these post offices from closure."
