'It is in everyone's interests for this disagreement to be resolved quickly' - Kevin Lang

Tram works, which were due to start on Princes Street this weekend, will not go ahead as planned, due to last minute changes demanded by the contractors. Liberal Democrats in Edinburgh North & Leith have backed Edinburgh City Council for standing firm.

Work on Princes Street for the return of trams to Edinburgh was to commence tomorrow (Saturday 21st February) but had to be put on hold because of contractors demands for £50-80 million of additional money.

Local Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate, Kevin Lang said:

"Given the obvious disruption, it is frustrating to see any delay to the tram works on Princes Street. However, the Council is absolutely right to stand firm against these last minute demands from contractors, given the fixed price contract that was signed last year.

"A considerable amount of taxpayers' money is being invested in the tram project and given these tough economic times, the Council and Tie should be applauded for protecting the public purse in the way that they are.

"It is in everyone's interests for these disagreements to be resolved as soon as possible. However, a last minute demand from contractors for such a considerable amount of additional money is clearly unacceptable. They contracts that were signed in good faith must be honoured."
