Liberal Democrat Councillor warns of increase in bogus callers8.44.07pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 7th May 2009
Cllr Louise Lang is warning residents to be extra vigilant when unexpected callers come to the door. Spring is a particularly popular time for these pretend workmen to come round - offering to help people get their homes in order for the summer. Louise, the Liberal Democrat Councillor for Leith Walk ward, which includes Bonnington, Pilrig, Hillside and Broughton said; "These bogus workmen turn up unannounced saying things like 'I was in the area and wondered if you needed any work done' or similar. They come across very friendly and as if they're almost doing you a favour by knocking on your door. Don't take the chance. Tell them you have a regular tradesman already. Alternatively, look up their business name in the phonebook and call the number to confirm - don't take their word for it." Lothian and Borders Police encourage people to ask for identification and to call the business before letting their representative in. Also, if you see anyone suspicious in the area, do phone the police number 311 3131 with any information including a description of them, and a registration number of any car they are using.
