Lib Dems must oppose Salmond's rigged referendum - Kevin Lang

Kevin Lang said the SNP's Referendum Bill posed a dodgy question desiged to trick the people of Scotland.

The Liberal Democrats have confirmed their opposition to the SNP Government's referendum Bill, following a session on independence at the party's autumn conference, which was addressed by local Lib Dem candidate Kevin Lang.

A review into the Liberal Democrats' position on constitutional matters will continue under the chairmanship of Ross Finnie MSP, ahead of the 2011 Scottish Parliament elections.

Kevin Lang, the Liberal Democrat candidate for Edinburgh North & Leith said,

"The Liberal Democrats should have no truck with Alex Salmond's rigged referendum.

"The SNP's current Bill is a dodgy piece of legislation, asking a dodgy question that is designed to trick the people of Scotland. Liberal Democrat MSPs should vote against these plans if and when they come up for a vote in the Scottish Parliament.

"Nevertheless, we need to consider how we address the issue of independence, an issue that is haunting Scottish politics. It is my own view that we should have a referendum in the future but on our terms, putting forward a fair simple question and doing so at the right time."
